Glass Arts Center

This museum is proposed for downtown Bennington, Vermont, a vital, arts-oriented community. Our design blends the adaptive reuse of a brick-and-glass structure listed on the National Historic Registry with an innovative lightweight interior.

Phase One reinvents 5,000 square feet as the center’s American glass galleries, gift shop, offices and storage space. The focal point is a demountable glass display wall composed of two vertical planes of glass sandwiching glass shelves. A sleek cable mounting system secured to the concrete floor and ceiling supports the components.

The ribbon-like wall acts as an organizing element for visitors, drawing them through the galleries and creating a dynamic and unifying visual experience. The wall also encloses a gift shop. The transparency of the wall permits a modest staff to operate the shop and discretely supervise the galleries.

Phase Two relocates the wall and main entrance into the center of the remaining 35,000 square feet. Museum facilities expand to include additional galleries, a library, an auditorium, food service areas and a glass-working studio.
