West Side
When the owners of this co-op on the Upper West Side of Manhattan came to us for a new kitchen and bath, we seized the opportunity to invigorate their apartment’s basic layout. The space had a classic New York shape: long and narrow with windows at either end. Little natural sunlight reached the kitchen, bath and living room in the co-op’s center.
Our design puts the new kitchen and bath behind an irregular curved wall. The curve adds drama and creates a visual connection between the ends of the apartment. On one end, the curve bulges out to create more privacy for the master bedroom. The curve gently flattens on the other end, allowing the living room and the kitchen to flow together. Brightly lit maple cabinetry and opalescent glass tiles transform the curved wall into a “lantern” that makes up for the lack of natural sunlight.
Tight spaces like this one bring out one of our special talents: Exacting space planning. Here we tucked away a “frieze” of hidden storage space just under the ceiling (accessed by a library ladder), and found room for a new washer and dryer.
